The English Education Act was passes in the year 1835 by Lord William Bentinck who was by then the Governor-General of the British East India Company. This act was aimed at reallocating funds the East India Company was required by the British Parliament to spend on education and literature in India. This act came into effect in 1839. English was introduced by Lord William Bentinck and Thomas Babington, better known as Macaulay.
