Hello,

The epidermis makes up the outermost covering of the plant cell.

Epidermis is the single cell thick protective cover which is present at the outermost part of the plant.
Epidermis had various works to do.
For example,
In xerophytic plants epidermis forms the outermost part of plant (like in cactus) where it secrets a chemical called cutin which prevents the water loss in those plans. As water loss in those plans can prove fatal.

Also,
The epidermis turns into secondary meristem known as cork cambium where it is deposited with a chemical known as tannin.

Also, it protects the plant from various insect and physical attacks and helps the plant in various critical situations.

Presence of epidermis is very important for a plant to sustain.

Hope this will be helping you ✌️
