That waxy coating is a thick cuticle layer with some sort of natural waxy substance.

This helps the plant to retain their water within the plant as it seals and protects the moisture that the plant already bears.

Underneath this waxy layer, the plants have smaller, fewer and deeper pores which prevent the evaporation of water by hot and dry winds.

These plants also possess the modified leaves into thorns to decrease surface area for evaporation.
