As Kel Doll, notes in her answer the ‘.DocX’ extension is the well known primary file type that was first introduced in this version of Word. MS Word 2007 also worked with:

.DotX - Word Template - Template for creating new Office Word 2007 files that do not contain macros.
.DotM - Word Macro-Enabled Template .dotm Template for creating new Office Word 2007 files that contain macros. If you want to include UI customizations or macros in the template, use this file format.
.Dot - Word 97-2003 Template .dot Template for Word 97-2003 files.
