a) it refers to the albatross, a bird of good omen. ( giant sea bird with wing span of 4 metres )
b) before the arrival of albatross there were no south winds. The sailors were bereft of any hope. when the albatross arrived the south winds started flowing and they sailed in the northern direction.
c) arrival of albatross coincided with the flow of south winds that is why it was a welcome change for all of the sailors who had seen death in eyes.
d) the albatross was shot dead by the ancient mariner with the help of crossbow. this was clearly a wanton act that made the soul of ancient mariner sinful. the dead albatross was hanged on the neck of mariner as a symbol of his guilt and sin.
