Lizzie Valverde and Katy Olson had always dreamed of becoming writers, but they had never imagined what would happen next.
In January 2013, while enrolling in a creative writing class at Columbia University Ordinary School, Valverde and Olson discovered that they were long lost sisters.
The siblings - separated by one year - were born to a young mother in Tampa, Florida, and were adopted by two separate families. Valverde grew up in New Jersey and Olson grew up in Florida and the Midwest.
But with the change of heart, on the first day of their book writing, the students made presentations and the details of their childhood seemed a bit overwhelming.
"We had an unusual acquaintance," Valverde, 35, who lives in New Jersey with his 6-year-old daughter Estella, told NBC News.
"It was crazy," said Olson, 34, a New York City comedian, about a chance encounter that could change the lives of both of them. “Chances are we got it? Do the math. "
After that lucky class, the sisters went to a local bar, and on the buffalo wings and beer covered their lives.
On Monday, Valverde received his master's degree in art from the Columbia campus in New York City. And their admirers were Olson, along with their mother, Leslie Parker, 54, who offered to take the girls thirty years ago. It was the first time Parker had met Olson.
