The famine of 1958-61 in China is the worst recorded famine in world history. It was attributed to the absence of democracy in China. Can the same be said of spread of Covid-19 virus from Wuhan in China? Find out and write your opinion in not more than a paragraph.

The major contributing factors in the famine were the policies of the Great Leap Forward (1958 to 1962) and People's commune, in addition to some natural disasters such as droughts which took place during the period.

In April and May 1961, Liu Shaoqi, the 2nd Chairman of PRC attributed the famine 30% to natural disasters and 70% to man-made policies

After the launch of Reforms and Opening Up, the Communist Party of China (CPC) officially stated in 1981 that the famine was mainly due to the mistakes of the Great Leap Forward as well as the Anti-Rightist Campaign, in addition to some natural disasters and the Sino-Soviet split.
