Enfield Rifle Cartridges were introduced to the the sepoys (सिपाही romanticised) in the British Era. In order to load the rifle one had to bite the cartridge. This lead Mangal Pandey, a sepoy and India's Freedom Fighter to charge the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. This happened due to religious sentiments. A rumour was spread which said that the lubricant on the cartridge was made of cow and pig lard. This disgusted the Hindus (for cows) and Muslims (for pigs). However, there are no approachable evidence towards the usage of animal lards but it sure drove the Britishers crazy.
