The father and the son in the poem represent two different periods of time. The father represents old times, values, traditional orthodox times. The son represents the modern, contemporary, present times. The father, like all traditional and orthodox men values family relationships; the son does not care much about the relationship. He behaves like a stranger and stays distant.
