SOLUTION:

GIVEN:

1.Father is 26 years older than his son.

2.The sum of their ages is 56.

Let 'x' be the son's age.
Then the fathers age will be 'x+26'.

Then,(x)+(x+26)=56.

Solving the equation formed:

x+x+26=56.
2x+26=56.

Transposing 26 to RHS:

2x=56-26.
2x=30.

Transposing 2 to RHS:

x=30/2.
x=15.

x+26=41.

Therefore,the son's age is 15 and his father's age is 15+26=41 years.

Given :
Father is 26 years older than son.
The total age of father and son = 56 years.

Let,
Son's age be 'x' years

Father's age = (x + 26) years

So,

(According to the question)
The total age of father and son = 56 years.

Age of son + age of father = 56 years

=> x + (x + 26) = 56
=> 2x + 26 = 56
=> 2x = 56 - 26 [ by transporting 26 to RHS ]
=> 2x = 30
=> x = 30/2 [ by transporting 2 to RHS ]
=> x = 15

Hence,
Son's age = x years = 15 years.
Father's age = (x + 26) years = (15 + 26) = 41 years.
