Photosynthesis is a process which is used by the plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy. Some of this chemical energy is stored in the carbohydrate molecules, such as sugars and starches, which are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water, hence it is also called as photosynthesis. The word 'photosynthesis' is made up from two words: "photo" means "light" and "synthesis" means "putting together". Most of the green plants, algae and cyanobacteria perform photosynthesis and such organisms are known as photoautotrophs. Photosynthesis is largely responsible for producing and maintaining the oxygen content of the Earth's atmosphere.

The process of photosynthesis is generally represented by the equation:
