The figure shown is a square with a triangular hole cut into one side. The ratio of the height h of the triangle to a side length of the square is 5 to 6. The ratio of the base b of the triangle to the side length of the square is 1 to 2. If the area of the square is 36 square inches, what is the area of the shaded part of the square?

Answer:

28.5 square inches

Step-by-step explanation:

Area= side²

√36 = S

6 inches= S

ratio between height and side = H:S=5:6

H/S=5/6

H/6=5/6

so height (H)=5inches

similarly

base:side(B:H)= 1:2

on substituting value of H we get,

base(B)=3 inches

area of the triangle cut = 1/2xBxH

area= 7.5 square inches

ar. of shaded portion = ar of square - ar of ∆

=36-7.5

= 28.5square inches

hope it helps
