Hyder Ali became commander of the Mysore army in the latter half of the 18th century. This posed a threat to the Marathas, the Nawab of Carnatic and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The Marathas and The Nizam of Hyderabad joined hands with the British and fought against Mysore. Later the Nizam allied with the British and fought against the Marathas. The British made use of the rivalry between the local rulers and gradually gained victory over them. In 1767, the British, along with their allies, the Marathas and the Nizam, attacked Hyder Ali of Mysore. But Hyder Ali managed to woo and get the support of both the Marathas and the Nizam. The British were then forced to sign ‘The Madras Peace Treaty’ which brought an end to the first Anglo-Mysore War.
