The ancient Athens is the birth place of democracy and considered as the world's oldest democracy.
The ancient Athenian Greeks are credited with inventing the institution of democracy. Their governmental system wasn't designed for the enormous, spread out, and diverse population of modern industrialized nations. Athens originally had rule of kings, but gradually it developed a system that required active, ongoing participation of the citizens. The society was divided into two classes, the upper sat with the king in council. Virtually all citizens were allowed to participate in the democracy except children, women, slaves and resident aliens. In ancient Greece, there were many independent, self-governing city states.
Athenian democracy included appointment of citizens to office and active participation in the running of the country.

The ancient Greek is known for its implementation of Democracy in its city-states, in particular, at Athens. Cleisthenes (the lawgiver) introduced reforms in the constitution of Athens in order to establish the rule by people. Therefore, he established the democracy in the Athens in 508 B.C. Thereafter, Athens was controlled by a democratically elected assembly. Thus Athens presents the first evidence of the democratic government as the legal decision making power was in the hands of the assembly of citizens (any male, who born in the city-state of Athens, and not women).
