The first iron and steel industry was
established in 1830 at Porto Nova in Tamil
Nadu. However, it could not succeed and was
closed down in 1866. Other efforts were also
made during the second half of the 19th century
but met with the same fate.
The era of iron and steel industry in India
started in 1907 when Tata Iron and Steel
Company (TISCO) was established by Jamshetji
Tata at Jamshedpur (Sakchi at that time) in
Jharkhand (previously in Bihar). Some major
steel plants in the country are located at Bhilai
(Chhattisgarh), Rourkela (Odisha), Durgapur
and Burnpur (West Bengal), Bokaro (Jharkhand),
Bhadravati and Vijayanagar (Karnataka),
Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Salem
(Tamil Nadu).
