In 1820, a method to roll wrought iron rails was developed by John Birkenshaw. Wrought iron rails became the standard at that point. In 1807 the first public railway that carried passengers was the Swansea and Mumbles Railway at Oystermouth. It used horse-drawn carriages on an existing tramline.
