Established on 24 January 1857 the University of Calcutta is the oldest of the modern universities in India. Governor General Lord Canning was the first Chancellor and James William Colvile (the Supreme Court’s Chief Justice) became the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. The University began functioning on 30 January 1858.
