As we know that in our country different languages are spoken. Different languages are spoken in different states. Although Hindi is spoken in the largest part of our country, after independence, Hindi was given the status of official language between the Center and the states along with English for official purposes. Initially it was provided that English would be used till 1965 and after that Hindi would remain a completely official language. But after 1965, many non-Hindi speaking states, especially the South Indian states, requested English to be the language of official purposes. Hence the central government continued the use of Hindi as well as English for official purposes. Hindi was not forced on those states where Hindi is not spoken.

Sinhalese, the language spoken by the Sinhalese community in Sri Lanka, is spoken by 74% of the people. Apart from this, the number of people belonging to Tamil speaking community in Sri Lanka is also around 18%. In 1956 the Sri Lankan government recognized Sinhalese as an official language and disregarded the Tamil language. Due to this, tension was established between Sinhalese community and Tamil communities. Such situation did not come in our country, it was possible only because of the flexibility shown by the leaders of our country.
