The following map shows the average monthly precipitation in the western United States. The areas in dark blue have very high amounts of precipitation, and the areas in orange have very low amounts of precipitation. The air over this area is dry because most of its moisture fell as precipitation near the coast. B. The water cannot travel long distances from the coast because it is heavier than air. C.
