Given : marks scored by students in an examination

To find : Calculate the mean marks correct to 2 decimal places.

Solution:

Convert cumulative frequency into normal frequency

Marks     Mean Marks       f               A = (mean - 22.5)/5     fA

0 - 5                  2.5            3                 -4                            - 12

5 - 10                7.5             7                -3                             - 21

10 - 15               12.5           15               -2                             - 30

15 - 20             17.5            24               -1                             - 24

20 - 25             22.5          16                 0                             0

25 - 30             27.5           8                1                                8

30 - 35             32.5           5                2                              10

35 - 40              37.5           2               3                               6

                                            80                                           -63

Mean =  22.5    +  5 ( - 63) / 80

= 22.5 - 3.9375

= 18.5625

= 18.56

18.56 is the Mean
