Step-by-step explanation:

Given The following table shows the frequency table of literacy rate (in percentage) of  35 cities. Find the mean literacy rate by assumed mean method:  Literacy rate (in percentage) 45 - 55 55-65 65-75 75-8585-98

Number of cities   3 10 11   Take 70 as the assumed mean. Find mean up to two places of decimal.

Literacy rate      Number of  (fi)  Class mark(xi)  xi – 70 ui = xi – 70/10   fiui

                            cities

45-55                     3             45 + 55/2 = 50     50 – 70 = -20  -20/10 = -2   3x-2=-6

55-65                   10             55 + 65/2 = 60      60 – 70 = -10 -10/10 =-1   10x-1 =-10

65-75                   11             65 + 75/2 = 70      70-70 = 0         0/10 = 0    11 x 0 = 0

75-85                    8              75 + 85/2 = 80     80 - 70 = 10      10/10 = 1    8 x 1 = 8

85-95                    3               85 + 75/2 = 90     90 – 70 = 20     20/10 = 2    3 x 2 = 6

         So ∑ fi = 40                                                                                 ∑fiui = - 2

  • So Mean = a + h x ∑fiui / ∑fi now a = assumed mean = 70
  • Also h = class interval = 55 – 45 = 10
  • Also ui = xi – a/ h
  • Now ∑fi = 35 and ∑fiui = - 2
  • So Mean = 70 + 10 x – 2/35
  •               = 70 – 20 / 35
  •               = 70 – 0.57
  • Mean x bar = 69.43

So Mean literacy rate is 69.43 %
