The formula for ammonia is NH3. Explain why its solution in water is alkaline.

Once ammonia(NH3) dissolve in water, they react with water(H2O) and generate ammonium ion(NH4+) & hydroxide ion(OH-). Because this hydroxide ion decrease the relative concentration of hydrogen ion(H+), the solution becomes basic.
