The stoichiometric coefficient of M is 1 that will be valency of Cl and the stoichiometric coefficient of Cl  is 3 which will be valency of M Hence MCl3= M^3+  and 3Cl^1- This empties M^3+ and O^2- = M2O3 this will be the formula of metal oxide

The formula of its oxide is M_2O_3.

  • The given formula of the metal chloride is MCl_3.
  • Thus here the metal M exist as M^{+3} ion and Cl exist as chloride ion or Cl^- ion.
  • Again oxide exists as O^{2-} ion and metal exist as M^{+3} ion. So, according to the criss cross method M will get the charge of the oxide and the oxygen will get the charge of the metal and te formula of the metal oxide is M_2O_3.
