The formula of methane is CH₄ and its succeeding member ethane is expressed as
C₂H₆. The common difference of succession between them is _______ .

As you know that formula for methane is CH₄ and next member is C₂H₆ i.e. Ethane.

The general formula of Alkane is CnH2n+2.

means if carbon atoms are 2 then hydrogen atoms are 2*2+2=6
so to compare both C₂H₆ and CH₄ the common difference is CH₂.
Let's check the difference between Alkane's 2nd and 3rd member.: 3rd member is propane C:3,H=8
C3H8: propane
common difference is again CH2.
