Given two elements X an Y
The formula of oxide of element X is XO.
Hence by criss cross method, Valency of element X  is 2.
The formula of oxide of element Y is Y2O3.
Hence by criss cross method valency of Y is 3.

As the valency of X is 2. It should be placed in Group 2 [Alkali Earth Metals]
As the valency of Y is 3. It should be placed in Group13.[Boron Family]
