Thank you for this question.

The reasons why the French began building canals and draining lands in the Mekong Delta included;

(i) Increase in cultivation.

(ii) Increase the Rice Production.

(iii) Increase International Trade of Rice.

(iv) Exploit the Cheap Labour.

The increase in the production was very beneficial for the colonial rule of the
French in Vietnam. They increased international trade by selling rice at a high price and gained a lot of profit.

Solution:

The main reason why the French began building canals and draining lands in the Mekong delta was to increase the cultivation.

With the advanced irrigation systems through canals, it led to high production of rice which helped the farmers to supply it to the international markets and becoming the largest exporter of rice.
