the french wanted to educate the vietnamese as they wanted a trained and smart workers. there was a problem for the french in terms of the language that was to be used to teach the vietnamese. the french reformers suggested that the lower classes were to be taught in vietnamese and the higher in french.

they thought that teaching them in french would make the vietnamese understand the french sentiments and the french would be able to create an asiatic france.

eg: in the tonkin free school, there were subjects like french, science and hygiene which took paid classes for the students separately in the evening.
