Let 1st exam grade be x

then second exam grade = x + 8

According to question.......

x + x + 8 = 174

2x + 8 = 174

2x = 174 - 8

2x = 166

x = 166/2

x = 83

hence

1st exam grade = 83

2nd exam grade = 83 + 8 = 91

Answer:

1st exam grade = 83

2nd exam grade = 91

Step-by-step explanation:

So from reading the information we know that one of the exams was 8 points higher than the other; in this case, the second test had a higher score. The equation to solve for x would look as follows:

2x + 8 = 174

so now we take away those 8 points.

2x + 8 = 174

     - 8      - 8

The 8 on the left of the equation gets canceled out.

Our new equation would leave us with a lower score on the right because what you do to one side of the equation has to be done to the opposite side, too.

2x = 166

__    ___

2        2

we now divide both sides and solve for x.

x = 83

Are we done? Not quite. we solved for x which is part a, so now we have to add the 8 points from the original equation to find the exact score of the second test.

x = 83; x =83 + 8 = 91

The first exam had 83 points while the second exam had 91 points (8 points higher)

Now to check our math, we add these two numbers together.

 83

+ 91

_____

 174
