There is some truth to it. I remember a study done 25 years or so ago of high school students and their preconceptions about astronomy, about what causes the seasons, about the scale of the solar system, and things like that. The study found that incoming students were not empty vessels ready to be filled. They already had a firm idea of how the universe worked. But it was mostly wrong. They had their own "private universe". This was a something of a revelation to teachers at the time. It was not enough to merely fill the student with new facts, since they would then be incorrectly integrated with the wrong "facts" they already "knew". They had to identify and remove the incorrect models as well.
