The name Mohenjo-daro is reputed to signify “the mound of the dead.” Thearchaeological importance of the site was first recognized in 1922, one year after the discovery of Harappa. Subsequent excavations revealed that the mounds contain the remains of what was once the largest city of the Indus civilization

Yes, Mohenjo-Daro or harappan sites are called as ‘Mound of the dead'. It is the name given by the locals to the place. Since Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) existed in that place and later it perished, the remains got buried under the soil. And layer after layer of soil was deposited on it until it appeared like a mound. The locals would sometimes find bones of the humans and other animals there, along with utensils,household items which belonged to the Indus valley civilization. These finds of bones etc made the locals call it the Mound of the dead' or Mohenjo-Daro.
