The hardness of 50,000 litres of a sample of water was removed by passing it through a zeolite softener. The softener then required 200 Iitres of sodium chloride solution containing 150g/litre of NaCI for regeneration. Calculate the hardness of sample of water

Given:

50000litres of a sample of water

200 litres of NaCl solution (150g/lit) for regeneration

To find :

Hardness of sample of water

Explanation:

Amount of NaCl required for purification = 200\times 150 = 30000 gms

1gm equivalent of NaCl = 1 gm equivalent of CaCO_3 ( zeolite softener)

58.5gm of NaCl = 50 gm of CaCO_3

30000gm of NaCl = ? of  CaCO_3

Amount of NaCl in CaCO_3 equivalents = 25641 gm equivalent = 2.5641mg

50000 litres of water contains 2.5641 mg of hardness

1 litre of water contains 512.8 mg/litre

Therefore hardness of water = 512.8 ppm (ANS)
