The heating element of an immersion water heater is made up of Nichrome.

Nichrome is an alloy of 80% nickel and 20% chromium.

Nichrome wire has low electrical conductivity and also a high melting point.

Low electrical conductivity opposes current, which leads to formation of heat energy. High melting point prevents Nichrome from oxidising (melting) at high temperatures.
