The height of a cone is 30cm a small one is cut off at the top by a plane parallel to the base if its volume be 1/27 th of the volume of the cone, at what height above the base is the section made?

Volume scale factor = 1/27
Linear scale factor = ∛(1/27) = 1/3

Height of small cone = 1/3 x height of large cone = 1/3 x 30 = 10 cm

∴ The large cone is cut at 30 - 10 = 20 cm above the base
