Answer:

17^2 = 8^2 + x^2

289  = 64 + x^2

x^2  =  289 - 64

x^2   = 225

 x     =  15

therefore length of the other side = 15 cm

Given : The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 17 cm long.

one of the remaining two sides is 8 cm in length,

To Find : the length of the other side

Solution:

Let say other side = x  cm

Using Pythagorean theorem

x² + 8² = 17²

=> x² = 17² - 8²

=> x² = (17 + 8)(17 - 8)

=> x² = 25 * 9

=> x² = 5² * 3²

=> x = 5 * 3

=> x = 15 cm

other side is 15 cm
