Photosynthesis is the primary function of the leaves and requires carbon dioxide, water and sunlight, which are used to produce glucose and oxygen, as can be seen from the photosynthesis equation:

6CO2 + 6H2O + energy from light → C6H12O6 + 6O2 (Carbon Dioxide + Water + energy from light → glucose and oxygen
