Ubuntu is what I call a second generation GNU/Linux distribution. What that means is that Ubuntu is a team effort of engineers, designers (and a company name Canonical) that is, itself, based on another GNU/Linux distribution named Debian.

Debian was long known as a stable and high value Linux distribution, with a solid package manager (to install, update, and remove software), and many ways of getting quality support from the Debian community. Ubuntu started from that and added many new points of value:

Long Term Commercial Support — I know when I build a server on an Ubuntu LTS release, I can depend on Canonical to continue to release bug fixes and security patches for the next five years. For my servers, this saves me time, money, and anxiety when building on Ubuntu

Ubuntu worked on a lot of the user interface for both the GUI and the installer to make the process of adopting and using a Linux based operating system much more realistic for the average user. This is critical for adoption on the client side, which will often lead to the next generation of server admins.

Canonical (and the other volunteers around Ubuntu) also worked hard on better hardware support, including graphics card support and acceleration. For anyone who has a super powerful desktop that still has a hard time dragging a Google Chrome window around on their screen, they can deeply appreciate the work that the people around Ubuntu have done.

They embraced open source. They gave back, not just to Debian (and the GNU/Linux community as a whole), they have also welcomed third generation Linux distributions to be based on Ubuntu to be created, distributed, and in some cases, to reach a wider audience than Ubuntu, which still having Ubuntu (and Debian) at their core.

Ubuntu is important because it has been a good step in the right direction of open source operating systems and has been a good citizen in the greater Linux community.
