There was an internal conflict in the Maratha empire between two rulers, Yashwant Rao Holkar, and Daulat Rao Scindia.

Battle of Poona

Baji Rao II the Maratha emperor supported Daulat Rao Scindia and waged war against Yashwant Rao Holkar, which was the battle of Poona in 1802.

But Holkar defeated the Scindia and Baji Rao II, which resulted in Baji Rao seeking the help of English East India Company.

Lord Wellesley was the then Governor-general and he used this as an opportunity to meddle with the affairs of the Maratha.
