Instrument used to measure the potential difference between the two ends of a conducting wire is a VOLTMETER.

What is a VOLTMETER?

  • VOLTMETER is basically a converted galvanometer with a large resistance.

  • This device is connected in parallel to the wire/resistance whose potential difference we want to measure.

  • Due to its high resistance, it takes negligible amount of current through itself, hence useful to measure the potential difference.

  • Once circuit is connected, the needle in the voltmeter undergoes deflection and the potential difference across the wire or resistance can be seen from scale.

  • However, Potentiometer is the instrument of choice over voltmeter while measurement of Potential Difference.
