The intensity of the waves generated by an earthquake and its time of  occurrence is recorded by a Seismograph.

These detect and record the occurrence of the major and minor seismic waves which are nothing but the propagating vibrations that carry energy from the source of an earthquake outward in all directions and travel through the interior of the Earth.
