The intrapleural pressure increases when diaphragm contracts

During inspiration, thediaphragm and external intercostal muscles contract,increasing the volume of the thoracic cavity. This causesthe intrapleural pressure to become more negative, whichincreases the transpulmonary pressure, causing the lungs toexpand.
