The ions formed by metals are known as cations while the ions formed by nonmetals are known as anions.

  • Metals are the most elements of group -1 and group -2 of the periodic table while non-metals belong to most members of p-block elements.
  • Metals of alkali and alkaline earth metals tend to gain stability by losing 1 and 2 electrons respectively and form cations.
  • For example, Potassium (k) loses 1 electron while calcium (Ca) loses two electrons and forms {k}^{ + } and {ca}^{2 + } respectively.
  • Similarly, non-metals such as oxygen, nitrogen, and fluorine gain stability by gaining 2,3 and 1 electrons respectively. After gaining 2,3 and 1 electron they form anions of charge -2, -3, and -1 respectively.
