The issue of gold coins during the Gupta period reflected the good financial health of the kingdom. However, the design and execution gradually deteriorated as a result of their territory getting reduced in size. During  Chandragupta's rule the use of gold was almost 90% of the coinage, which reduced to 75-80% during the reign of Skandagupta, which went on to show an economic decline.
