The demonstrations against the Rowlatt Act were accompanied by violence at some places. In one such incident , two Congress leaders, doctor Saifuddin kitchlew and Dr Satyapal were arrested by the government in Amritsar .Also the government banned meetings at public places .The next day, on 13th April 1919 ,unaware of the order some people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to protest against the rest of the Congress leaders. As they assembled General Dyer entered the park with his troops ,blocked the exit and ordered his troops to open fire .Hundreds of people were killed or wounded. The massacre aroused widespread public Fury and Lieutenant Governor of Punjab Michael O'Dwyer responded by imposing martial law in Punjab.
