Answer:

The lady said to the vendor,"When I can get fresh vegetables?"

ExploRe moRe:

➝ Rama said Harry is an ideal boy

➝ Rama said that Harry was an idle boy.

These two sentences illustrate the two ways in which we may report the words of a speaker.

Direct speech:

✰ In the first sentence, we give the exact words used by the speaker this is called direct speech on narration.

In the first sentence, 'said' is called the reporting verb and 'Harry is an ideal boy' is called the reported speech.

Indirect speech:

✰ In the second sentence, we do not give the exact words of the speaker but give only the substance of what he said. This is called indirect speech on narration.

Examples:

Tom says,"There is no ink in the pot."

Tom says that there is no ink in the pot.

John said,"I am busy."

John said that he was busy.

Bali said to Ashok,"You are good boy."

Bali told Ashok that he was a good boy.

Jone said to him,"You have not done your work."

Jone told him that he had not done his work.

I said,"I will not go there."

I said that I would not go there.

Suppose your teacher told you that you were the most intelligent boy in your class. You want to convey this to your parents. You can do it in either of these two ways:

  1. My teacher said to me, “You are the most intelligent boy in the class.”
  2. My teacher told me that I was the most intelligent boy in the class.

In sentence 1, you have repeated your teacher's exact words. In order to make it clear that you are repeating the words actually spoken by the teacher, they are put within Quotation marks ("... ..."). This method of quoting someone is called Direct Speech or Narration.

In sentence 2, you have put in your own words what the teacher said. This method of quoting someone is called Indirect Speech or Narration.

What is Direct Speech?

  • When the exact words used by a speaker are reproduced within Quotation Marks, it is called Direct Speech.

What is Indirect Speech?

  • When the substance of a speech is conveyed in the reporter's words, it is called Indirect Speech
