She had already lost her will to live and she believed that she will die when the last leaf falls from the ivy plant outside her window. Behrman gives her the will to live by painting a leaf with exact realism which she considered to be true.As the leaf was a painting it didn't fall and finally Johnsy realizes her mistake and develops a will to live further.The old artist had to sacrifice his life for this.
