the actual distance from North to South is 3214 km , while from east to westis 2933 km. That's because the distance between two latitudes remains the same throughout, but the distance between two longitudes keeps reducing as we move towards the poles.

Answer:

The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of India is almost the same degrees.i.e 30 degrees. But the north south distance in Kilometers is 3214 and the east west distance is 2933 km. This is  because of the nature of the latitudes and the longitudes. The distance between two is fixed between any two points and does not vary according to the area or shape. On the other hand, the longitudes are not parallel lines and the distance between the lines vary from equator to the poles. The distance is minimum at the poles and maximum near the equator.
