The leaves and stem of an onion plant die in the winter. The onion bulb, however, does not die and remains underground. How does this help the onion plant survive the winter?

Uneven irrigation of onion fields increases the incidence of this disorder. Fields that are over-irrigated, allowed to dry completely and then over-irrigated again often have many split bulbs. This condition is more prevalent in areas of the field were stands are thin or uneven.

Answer:

It's a little-known fact that many seasoned gardeners aren't aware of: you can grow onions (and shallots) in the winter. These super-hardy plants can survive incredibly cold temperatures with a little protection, and provide quality bulbs even after they bolt in the spring.
