The leaves of the desert plants are reduced to spines to help to prevent the loss of water by transpiration.

Transpiration is the process by which plants give out excess water in the form of vapour from their aerial parts.

Since in deserts, there is a scarcity of water, if the plants lose more water, they will not survive.

Hence to prevent this such adaptations have been developed.
