The length of a line segment joining A(2, -3) and B is 10 units. the abscissa of point B is 10 units.

To find : The ordinate of point B.

solution : let ordinate of point B is y.

then, point B = (10, y)

here distance between point A (2, -3) and point B(10, y) is 10 units.

using distance formula,

d = √{(x₁ - x₂)² + (y₁ - y₂)²}

⇒10 = √{(10 - 2)² + (y + 3)²}

⇒10 = √{8² + (y + 3)²}

squaring both sides and we get,

⇒10² = 8² + (y + 3)²

⇒100 - 64 = (y + 3)²

⇒(6)² = (y + 3)²

⇒y + 3 = ± 6

⇒y = -3 ± 6

⇒y = -9 and 3

Therefore ordinate can be -9 and 3
