A soldier’s surprise

It is spring of 1943 during World War II. Standing among hundreds of new soldiers at Camp Grant, in Illinois, my father, Sam, just 18 years old, waits as a truck slowly drives by. Let the breadth = x

Length = 2x-8

Perimeter = 2×(l+b)

= 2×(x+2x-8)

= 2×(3x-8)

According to problem

2×(3x-8)=56

3x-8= $\cancel\dfrac{56}{2}$

3x-8=28

3x=28+8

3x=36

x=$\cancel\dfrac{36}{3}$

$\therefore$Breadth= x=12m

$\therefore$Length= 2x-8=2×12-8=24-8=16m
